Reflective Candidates: 2009 Best Albums

As another year approaches it’s finale, I find it harder to reflect on such a length of time, or actually remember the time during the year that an event actually took place. A week, or two may work for me, but months are getting tougher to remember without some type of visual aid. Every year, even though I do enjoy lists, I tell myself that I will not do a year end list, especially this year when I barely could find 10 albums worth listing, but in the last few weeks I’ve found a few more candidates that have found itself burned onto CD’s and in my car. This list is what I discovered in 2009, so the bulk of it was released this year, but some were released in 2008, or even earlier.

The shows that I attended this year, according to my computer’s calendar: Lykke Li, Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Doves, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Wighonomy Bros, Micachu, Tune-Yards (4times), Bon Iver, Flight of the Conchords, The Jesus Lizard, McCoy Tyner.

Dirty Projectors – Useful Chamber – Off of their latest release, Bitte Orca, a truly remarkable and original album. Along with Micachu & The Shapes‘ Jewellery, one of the most unique compositions I’ve heard in quite a long time. Beatlesque in the different parts with sudden tempo changes that make this a standout track on an album packed with highlights .

Siriusmo – The Door – From frequent Modeselektor contributor and now the first official release on their new record label, Monkeytown.

Wavves – So Bored – This is Nathan Williams. Is this hipster new school DIY punk? Maybe. I still won’t buy a pair of Wayfarers.

The Pixies – Hey (Live) – I heard this song a few months back when I saw Kevin Smith’s Zach and Miri Make A Porno and it once again reminded me of the genius of this group. This on again, off again Boston band makes, or made music that is beyond the normal understanding of words with music. They make movies in which you need to provide the visuals while they supply your inner thoughts that are perfectly soundtracked with their music.

I have learned that a good night’s sleep greatly improves one’s outlook, as well as output for the day.

It seems that as though in a 10 day span in late May I have tickets for Doves, Moderat, Flight Of The Conchords, Animal Collective, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and a few weeks earlier Iron & Wine.

Lali Puna – I Like Rain (Jean Paul Sartre Experience) – from the Not Given Lightly compilation which are covers of New Zealand’s rich pop history. A Morr records collection highlighted by some new material by the always mood enlightening Lali Puna.

Grizzly Bear – Alligator – Off of the 2004 release, Horn Of Plenty. It sounds like it should be played in a crib telling the child the basics of life in a sweet lullabye.

Dirty Projectors – I Will Truck – This track from 2005 cautions “don’t trust the axis, or the allies”. I don’t trust anything , or anyone that’s first letter is an “A”.

Adam Beyer – A Walking Contradiction III – The first two installments were released on the Plus label, and this b-side continues the thumpy dig that Beyer is famous for by adding that extra step to keep you from falling asleep.
