Comfortably Hungry

Radio Flyer, Alameda Flea Market

I’ve been a bit lax on the posts lately. Since the start of my new business, Red Choo Choo, things have been a hectic around these parts. Also, I haven’t heard too much music that has caught my ear. I don’t think that’s supposed to makes sense. Anyhow, we have a great interview with Tune-Yards that we will be posting shortly. Enjoy the new and the old.

Anti-Pop Consortium – Volcano (Four Tet Remix) – They’re back together, so they can be further ignored by the public, most likely. Their new album, Fluorescent Black is a nice return. It would be great to have them make an entire album with Four Tet.

Flying Lotus – Infinitum (Dimlite’s Re-finitum) – Ahead of his time. From the LA EP, having bloodlines to Coltrane, this is the new Jazz that will be played for apple products in 2023.

The Smiths – Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Live) – Growing up, I never was a fan of The Smiths. I thought Morrisey’s moaning vocal delivery with his Elvis aesthetic killed whatever great music Marr was trying to play. I’ve softened my view over the years, being like sugar, I can still only take it in small doses, and this slowed down live version is a nicely aged whine.

The Stone Roses – I Wanna Be Adored – This is the 20th Anniversary remaster, and a perfect way to start an album. Eerie noises, the bass rolling in, the guitar slicing in through tiny spaces, and then the kick driving you towards a proclamation of greatness. A perfect album from a once, perfect band.

Mark Farrow Artwork for Spiritualized’s A+E

Do you believe in magic ?

Animal Collective – Street Flash : From the Water Curses EP, another freaked out pop gem by the bastard children of Brian Wilson. Soothing melodies over ear-bending screams and throw in all of the noises associated with your gold pinky ring falling down the sink. OhKnow!!!

Borko – Spoonstabber : Another great release off of the Morr Music label from Bjorn Kristiansson. Who doesn’t like the sound of birds chirping unless you’re lost, and then it can get a bit eery?

Four Tet – Wing Body Wing : The warm sounds of Kieren Hebden are presented in a more traditional fourfour format (say that 3x) on this track from the Ringer EP. His 2nd full length player, Rounds is still one of my favorites and helped me to open my ears to world of melody and abstract beats.

Spiritualized – Soul On Fire : I didn’t believe in the effectiveness of the new A+E prescription which stands for Accident + Emergency a few months back, as with the new Portishead concoction as well, but both have grown on me. Jason Pierce returns back to melodic form on this release and makes you want to shun that third stint in rehab, church, or both.

clarion alley series 2007

remember to thank your mom, your babymama and all of the mother’s out there for giving us life.

go warriors!

Jef Gilson – Fable Of Gutemberg (Four Tet Remix)
(Abstract Jazz) – this track is from a vinyl only release in 2004 and i finally got around to recording it onto my computer. kieran hebden (four tet) is a jazz master of the electronic variety especially with his recent works with steve reid.

Farmacia – Doctor Krupa (Abstract Beats) – another great find from aquarius records . a menacing track from this argentinian outfit.
Konono Nº1 – Kule Kule Reprise
(World) – featured on the new bjork album. beautiful rhythms throughout.
Gonzalez – Gentle Threat (Classical) – as part of the feist, jamie lidell crew. this master of the piano displays a moody piece here. his reworking of ‘multiply’ from jamie lidell is still a favorite.

Feist – The Park (Singer Songwriter) – apart from her work with broken social scene and her previous solo effort, i never payed too much attention to feist. this album is powerful. this track which sounds as if it was recorded in the outdoors shows a vulnerability and the same time showing a resolve which is reminiscent of ani difranco.
