Abominable Snowman vs Ollie, 2009

- Check out Objectified from Gary Hustwit, who wrote and directed Helvetica. Yes, a movie about the font.

- Treeless Mountain by So Yong Kim, who wrote and directed In Between Days, is coming to a small independent theater that may even be your own.

- The Mary-GO-Rounds are my favorite pants, but I haven’t found that exact inappropriate time to wear them. I wish I went to church on Sundays.

__________________________ ___ ________ _____ _ _ ________ ________

Hanne Hukkelberg – Midnight Sun Dream – She probably carried around a recorder in school in Norway, sat by herself in the cafeteria, wore clothes that were made fun of by her classmates, and now she’s making fun of you. Miss H wants you to hear the music in life, and she’s using her voice as on the many background noises to compliment it.

Fink – Sort Of Revolution – Fink has finally started to meld his downtempo productions with his singer-songwriter skills on this release of the same name. Hypnotic after a big bowl of cereal.

Ital Tek – Massive Error – This dubstep Womp off off of Planet Mu promises to wash your car and take out any dents caused by any type of music that may have been played in your car that is preceded by the adjectives Hi-Energy.

Kitchens Of Distinction – Drive That Fast (7″ Mix) - Off of the Drive That Fast EP from 1990 which I appropriated from Madchester Rave On. One of the British bands of the early 90′s that marked “underground” music before Seattle and Sub Pop killed it over here in the States with the brooding machismo that was more easily digestible by the masses.

This is my mixtape to you. It comes in at 62 minutes and 24 seconds, so you may have to get a 90 minute tape. You may even have to buy a cassette player, or just get one of these gadgets. Maybe, this is a way to convince you to go to my junior year Ring Dance, or maybe even the Senior Prom. We’ll have cases of Becks beer, Peach Schnapps and Wine Coolers for the ladies, and whatever else we need to make the night memorable. I’ll give it to you at Burger King, the place to drive to in between classes, and meet the girls from the sister school. And if I get caught for leaving campus, and get detention, it’ll be worth it. I’ll clean the toilets, tap the kegs for the jesuits, get on my knees…..to pray.

I hope you like the tape. It’s probably best if you go to a quiet place, and listen to it through your headphones. I think these things come together better when you don’t have too much time to think about it. Take a mood here, a lyric there, and you have this entirely new thing that’s made up from the smaller parts, to help to capture a feeling that may be difficult to express through words, in our adolescence. How a song can take you to a place, this mixtape will take you to all of the places, experiencing all of the unexpected, and help you to remember this small moment, in our time together.

SMS Text: Food Court MixTape (Download)

Milosh – You Make Me Feel - a simple message of how “it” can make you feel. the music has that dream-like, delirious quality, just like “it”. “you, beautiful moment in my life, a sweet wrinkle in time, so let’s stretch this thing out”

Joseph Arthur – Honey And The Moon - maybe it’s about a past love, but the melody has such optimism. “if you weren’t real, i would make you up, now”. “and right now, all your dreams are waking up”

Jeff Buckley – Morning Theft (Live) – “a heart that beats as both siphon and reservoir”

Björk – Headphones (Live) – the power of music to convey emotion. how music may be the most powerful language. “these abstract wordless movements”. “i like this resonance, it elevates me”

Sigur Rós – Med Sud I Eyrum (With A Buzz In Our Ears) – we’re traveling on a train and looking out the window into a vast open space of the future, and it doesn’t matter where we end up, it’s all about the journey and adventure to get there, together.

Hanne Hukkelberg – Ease – whimsical, yet painful. change can happen.

New Order – Every Little Counts – the laughter, for being stupid, together. not the greatest lyrics, but every little does count, like making a bed. “every second counts”.

Damien Rice – The Blower’s Daughter (Live) - “i can’t take my mind off of you”

The Cinematic Orchestra – To Build A Home (featuring Patrick Watson) – home is not necessarily a place. is it a state of mind, or another person ? “Out in the garden where we planted the seeds. There is a tree as old as me. Branches were sewn by the color of green. Ground had arose and passed it’s knees”

Daft Punk – Digital Love – so sappy, but such a great pop song about happiness and hope.

Cat Stevens – The Wind – when you least expect it, your soul will guide you in the right direction, or to the food court at the mall.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger – a song about purgatory which I have often felt that I was trapped in as well. all of the beautiful haunting imagery in one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. it has that sort-of sad optimism feeling to it. happy sad.

Bloc Party – Tulips (Original Version) – “this could be an opportunity”. the drumming helps to convey the mood of urgency, and trying to convince someone that this is special, that this is real……

Radiohead – Go Slowly - i love how his voice flows through, and acts out the lyrics, “come slowly to me”, “patiently”.

There’s a great site, Song Meanings which lists lyrics as well as user interpretations of each song, and it helped with the lyrics stated above.

Portland, 2008

My memory seems to fade faster and faster with age, as I am now reminded on a constant basis by a certain special someone, maybe as a way to help improve my memory……. This blog is a way for me to remember a certain moment in time, mainly in some abstract form. I spent this past extended weekend in Portland, which was planned and booked 48 hours before the trip. A spontaneous excursion with someone I have known for a little over 3 weeks. How it ended up, and what exactly took place, is not up for debate, but I would like to jot some notes down as if this blog were my 3×5 card memory aid for the trip.

(in no particular order)
-green apple burps
-dick cheney by the elevator
-cougar entry key
-’betty ford drunk dancing on a table’ entry key
-ronnnie lott in the portland airport
-california is 2000 miles from portland?
-californians are supposedly rude
-photo booth assistant
-nola, the unagreeable owl
-sara with an ‘h’, the waterfall beaver
-room 511
-no rental cars, hmm
-a zip car application takes 3 days
-canadien bikers on harley’s need directions
-dead battery in the minivan
-one giant pancake
-lunch?
-wine in a coffee cup, a reocurring theme
-hung far low chinese restaurant
-pillowtop, or muffin top
-menu of pillows ?
-coffee time
-honey bucket
-jamison shots
-spitting on the spitting plant
-a hummer h3 is classified as a “fun car”
-ipod clock
-toilets flushing everywhere
-stop the taxi, i need to buy a plaid suit

back to reality………….maybe

The Pixies – Break My Body - originally from the Surfer Rosa album, this is a live version from the late 80′s.

Hanne Hukkelberg – Break My Body (Live) – taking some liberties with the lyrics, this live flute-infused version of the Pixies track is better than the original. a soft and piercing voice that opens like a tragic hallmark card that will never be made.

Flying Lotus – Robo Tussin Ft. Lil Wayne – take one of the best producers right now with the hottest hip hop artist today. for all of lil wayne’s commercial appeal, he still has one foot in the underground. and you can’t deny the new albums from lil wayne as well as flying lotus are 2 of the best albums out right now. get los angeles from flying lotus out on Warp , the Blue Note of electronic music.

Bus – Treasure Island - i’m thinking that if you were molasses and you went into a ball crawl, at let’s say, Chuck E Cheese, this would be the song that would best describe your excursion. remember, don’t step on any kids and avoid the giant rat.

The artist that tagged the piece above, called “City Of Progress. SF. Jaut Cares” also did this piece . A hint of sarcasm ? At first I thought that the child in the picture was, in fact the real Jaut posing as a baby faced little person, but then I realized that it was Chris F’s kid, Little D. Yes, the legal first name of this child is LittleD. I guess if he ends up with a career as a hip hop MC, he’s already got the name covered. The reason for my confusion was, that I have this supposed actual photo of Jaut, and they do look similar. Look for yourself:

Modeselektor is playing tonight at Mighty, here in San Francisco. Finally, after three tries and for whatever reasons, I get to see the madness that is MDSLKTR. If you had to describe their music, I would have to say hip-hop artists masked as techno heads, or vice versa. They’ve been singled out by Thom Yorke of Radiohead as a favorite. Their mix album Boogybytes Vol. 3, off of Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, has tracks ranging from Spank Rock, Burial, Flying Lotus, Jean Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert, and Radiohead. I may just have to wave a hand in the air and ….you know the rest. It should be a good show, even though it’s at Mighty.

Here are 2 tracks that are about as different as the 2 pictures above.

Bonobo / Spank Rock – Nightlite [Zero Db Reconstruction] / Far Left [Mochipet Remix] – this is a track off of a promo of Ninja Tune mixes by Darko (of Spank Rock). the mochipet mix is right on, and for some more of his cracked out mixes especially of his mashup/mix of Bump by Spank Rock, check out his XLR8R podcast mix from last year.

Hanne Hukkelberg – The North Wind (Singer Songwriter) – using minimal instrumentation, hukkelberg creates an ideal mood for making break dance moves with just your fingers. the typewriter song.
