Get Onto The Bus…..

Nick Veasey X-Ray Photographs

It’s taken 4 months, but I think I am about caught up with all the aspects in my life. I was planning to go to Coachella, but for reasons beyond my control, I will have to hope that Plastikman brings his show to San Francisco soon. I do get to see Thom Yorke this week, and some other great upcoming shows.

Joanna Newsom – Swansea – A track from The Milk-Eyed Mender, a triple album from the harp playing voice that sounds at times as if it were on the verge of breaking.

The Antlers – Kettering – A song about dealing with the loss of someone with a terminal disease (cancer?). The song revolves in a quiet lull and then explodes which along with the beautiful lyrics sort of puts you in that state of mind.

Beach House – Zebra – Finally, a band from Baltimore that I am proud to write about. They are the perfect band for an over exposed sunny day where everything that surrounds is muted and deliberate.

LCD Soundsystem – Home – Off of the new album, a track that once again has that nice LCD shuffle that might make those Ray-Bans fall off your head. A wooden block has taken over for the cow bell.

Broken Bells – The High Road – Part Shins singer and part Danger Mouse. A nice release of understated pop songs that will not force me to like The Shins.

At Church, Cover Yourself

Church on Church (Street), 2008

I’m trying to bring back the hokey-pokey as a legitimate dance style. Are you with me people ?

Here are some songs that would make a great accompaniment for the retro dance move.

LCD Soundsystem – No Love Lost (Joy Division) - I think this sounds more like Joy Division than the original. Is that possible ?I think if I had a big house party, and the money, I would hire James Murphy and co.. Ask me 20 years ago, it would have been Oingo Boingo. Hmmmmmm

Arcade Fire – Brazil (Ary Barroso) – From the title to the brilliant Terry Gilliam movie, Brazil. A whimsical song for a movie that appears to have that same light airiness on the outside, but in reality at the heart, it’s a dark and twisted tale. Kinda like a clown.

The Blood Brothers – Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie) – Extreme as only the former Brothers of Blood know how to do it. I think it works well for this song, but nothing can top the Van Winkle version. To the extreme….

Editors – Lullaby (The Cure) - The classic track from the darkly lit Disentegration album. Covered by one of the Ian Curtis sounding like bands. The other being Interpol. This should have been the title track for any of the awful Spiderman movies.

I am not doing a “best of” list this year. I had some songs and some albums put together, but I figure if you go through my posts throughout the year, you can find out what I dig/dug. As most of the tracks are still up for your listening or d-loding pleasure, go dig. I actually did put together a list of best albums which is on a friend’s new site which should be ready sometime next year, so…… Instead of lists, I put together a compilation of songs, some old, some new, some crude…..some just hard-to-find.

People Press Play – Always Wrong
Ben Benjamin – Selective Periphera nov1
Thom Yorke – A Rat’s Nest
Mikkel Metal – Brikan
Saul Williams – Black Stacey (Deadbeat Remix)
Matthew Dear – Deserter
Pinback – Devil You Know
Spoon – Black Like Me – Spoon
Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem Cover)
Nina Simone – Since I Fell For You
Cold War Kids – Electioneering (Radiohead Cover)

One.Sun.Day – Covers and Remixes

red poles.

the site here is changing. we’re going soopercorporate. i plan on hiring about 100 people to look important and stare out of the windows. i’ve already placed 1000 subliminal banners and ad buttons all over the site. what, you can’t see it ? and you thought the post pics were just amateur pics taken by myself ? if you look closely at each red pole in the pic above, it displays the names of every major soft drink manufacturer. i bet you feel the need for a cool carmelized carbonated beverage right about now.

seriously…i am going to try to post more independent artists that have been so kind as to send me music. also, i am starting a series of interviews called forwardmusic. it will feature artists that are truly progressive in music in terms of production and performance.
besides the massive amounts of music i actually purchase, i find some great stuff from other blogs, in my inbox, and from other kind sources. here are some of the great remixes and covers i’ve obtained recently, and thanks.

Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem Cover) (Indie Beats) – my favorite song from ‘sound of silver’ and a great guitar-based cover.

Bjork – Earth Intruders (Spank Rock Remix) (Hip Hop) – i’m still getting my arms around ‘volta’, but this remix is another stake in the claim of spank rock being one of the current kings of hip hop.

M.I.A. – Birdflu (Guns up Buraka Mix) (Hip Hop) – a new song and a great remix. i think it has that kanye sample, or the sample kanye used in that song.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hyperballad (Live) (Bjork Cover) (Acoustic) – a gentle rework of the longing optimism originally done by Mrs.G. i heard she killed it at coachella on friday night and i can’t wait for her show here.

Soulwax – Wouldn’t It Be Good (Nik Kershaw Cover) – showing off the soulwax band side. a sweet melody and an interesting cover which i originally heard off of the john hughes soundtrack. say what you will about his movies, but he provided the best soundtracks in the 80′s.

Noze – Kitchen (T. Schaeben Tombo’s Teflon Wok Remix) (Techno) – thanks rayna. maybe i should trade my seasoned carbon steel wok for a teflon one. wow.
