The First Light of The Night

30th Street Station, Philadelphia

It’s that time of day either late summer, or early fall when you’re playing outside all day and it slowly starts to get dark. Before a light is even turned on in the neighborhood, as the sunlight has moved from one side of the street to the other side, and now it’s about to go home as well. That first light of the night, or what seems like dusk, is something only experienced in childhood. It’s the calmness of the day settling in for the night. The transitional time when everything seems still, and you are the only one that exists.

Mochipet – You Got Your IDM In My Dubstep Again! – From the Master P on Atari MixTape, it’s another workout for your boombox. Danceable dubstep, probably.

Moderat - Nasty Silence Album Medley A New Error – The collaboration from Modeselektor and Apparat. What would seem like an unlikely pairing produces harmony in the controlled and often humorous chaos of Modeselektor.

AGF/Vladislav DelayMost BeautifulOne of the most direct tracks from this duo.

AGF/Vladislav Delay – In Cycles – A syncopated cloud of white noise with AGF’s voice acting as the plane cutting through the sky.

The Hospitals – Getting Out Of Bed – They are from San Francisco, and they make noise, but it’s that noise that you makes you pay attention, and not the kind that you ignore from hearing endlessly throughout your life.

FoeWeel 3.0 Welcome

Ocean Beach, 2009

Welcome to the new look, a slightly different smell and the taste that’s always pleasing to my ears, and hopefully your ears as well. My desktop is filled up with new music and my fridge is full of tickets for upcoming shows to Lykke Li, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, Rocco DeLucca and hopefully Iron & Wine, so it’s time once again to fill your Facebook stuffed minds with an alternative serving of the present and the past.

TV On The Radio – Heroes (David Bowie) – from the new War Child compilation. a pretty cool take with Kyp’s falsetto working well over David Sitek’s hectic production.

Mochipet and Spank Rock – Far Left (Funktronmix) – David Wang, the insanity behind Mochipet once again serves up one of his Daly Citified mixes of Spank Rock.

The Books Ft. Jose Gonzalez – Cello Song (Nick Drake) – from the Dark Was The Night a 4AD compilation benefitting the Red Hot organization.  This track from two of my favorite artists is a cover of Nick Drake’s classic song.

I have no idea what is going on.
Radiohead is playing on Friday in Golden Gate Park.
Me, and 90K of my closest friends on Facebook will be there to witness the first band to play at nighttime in the park.
Bring a flashlight.

Schedule for Friday.
5:00-5:25 – Steel Pulse @ Lands End
5:25-6:10 – Cold War Kids @ Sutro
6:15-6:45 – Manu Chao @ Lands End
6:50-7:50 – The Black Keys @ Twin Peaks
8:00-10:100 – Coldplay Lite @ Lands End

I hate Tom Petty and Jack Johnson, who are headlining the rest of the weekend.
Jack Johnson is the Tom Petty of today. Everything sounds the same. They should smoke each other.
GOing to see Popcorn Superhet Receiver at the Herbst on Thursday night.

Mochipet – Rapcats (Featuring Zaptap-Citizen 10) - David Wang loves Daly City. He’s probably the only one who loves this city in the Bay Area. Somewhat of a straightforward track for this finger-in-the-electrical-socket wizard.

Burial – South London Boroughs - this is where it began. it helped to define a new style of music. dubstep, which scares most people, yet somehow has found it’s way into yoga studios ? For fuck’s sake….

The Walkmen – What’s In It For Me – from the classic Bows + Arrows album which has yet to be topped in subsequent releases. A great way to start an album that has songs that are either in your face or just a blurry dream, like this track.

Beirut – A Sunday Smile (Live) – a live version from Paris. gypsies, the circus and the bearded lady.

Do You Care ?

The artist that tagged the piece above, called “City Of Progress. SF. Jaut Cares” also did this piece . A hint of sarcasm ? At first I thought that the child in the picture was, in fact the real Jaut posing as a baby faced little person, but then I realized that it was Chris F’s kid, Little D. Yes, the legal first name of this child is LittleD. I guess if he ends up with a career as a hip hop MC, he’s already got the name covered. The reason for my confusion was, that I have this supposed actual photo of Jaut, and they do look similar. Look for yourself:

Modeselektor is playing tonight at Mighty, here in San Francisco. Finally, after three tries and for whatever reasons, I get to see the madness that is MDSLKTR. If you had to describe their music, I would have to say hip-hop artists masked as techno heads, or vice versa. They’ve been singled out by Thom Yorke of Radiohead as a favorite. Their mix album Boogybytes Vol. 3, off of Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, has tracks ranging from Spank Rock, Burial, Flying Lotus, Jean Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert, and Radiohead. I may just have to wave a hand in the air and ….you know the rest. It should be a good show, even though it’s at Mighty.

Here are 2 tracks that are about as different as the 2 pictures above.

Bonobo / Spank Rock – Nightlite [Zero Db Reconstruction] / Far Left [Mochipet Remix] – this is a track off of a promo of Ninja Tune mixes by Darko (of Spank Rock). the mochipet mix is right on, and for some more of his cracked out mixes especially of his mashup/mix of Bump by Spank Rock, check out his XLR8R podcast mix from last year.

Hanne Hukkelberg – The North Wind (Singer Songwriter) – using minimal instrumentation, hukkelberg creates an ideal mood for making break dance moves with just your fingers. the typewriter song.
