Dec is the Place

Two Lids, 2011.

Welcome back campers. Here are some tidy sensory blips for the benefit of your imagination, and future generations. I seem to be finding new music more and more through movies and TV these days, so here are some of those selections.

Aloe Blacc – I Need A Dollar – The theme song, for the now cancelled HBO show How To Make it In America otherwise known as the Vice Magazine show.

Hoagy Carmichael – Stardust – From the movie and trailer for Mike Mills’ Beginners. One of the better films of the year. This song also fit perfectly with my wedding this year.

Nina Simone – If I Should Lose You – I got this track from a bar scene in the AMC show The Killing. A bleak murder mystery that takes place in rainy Seattle which adds to the overall misery and suffering that every character seems to wear like a noose.

Bon Iver – Michicant - A somewhat more light-hearted? second release, and a great album if not for the John Hughes inspired last track.

Shigeto – Look At All The Smiling Faces - A nice soundtrack for the cold weather that has arrived with rain nowhere to be felt.

The Middle East – Blood – First heard from It’s Kind Of A Funny Story, and more recently in the somewhat surprisingly good Crazy, Stupid Love. The band is from Australia, and comes recommended by the FDA and Consumer Reports.

Bye.

Fireworks Test 7/3, San Francisco

Great suitcases for every occasion.

A great invention: The Split Ring Key

For fans of The State, which is now, finally out on DVD, there is a new series on Comedy Central from two members of The State called Michael & Michael Have Issues. Members of the cult comedy, The State which aired on MTV, have also gone on to create Reno 911.

Jeff Buckley – We All Fall In Love Sometimes (Elton John & Bernie Taupin) – From the soundtrack to My Sister’s Keeper,  a movie that would definitely give me a case of the nods, comes this cleaned up, unreleased song which is actually played live for WFMU’s Music Faucet program.

Bill Janovitz – Little Mascara – A classic from The Replacements, by the front man for Buffalo Tom. A release from his website.

Plastikman – Contain – In 1998, Richie Hawtin created an album, Consumed, that continues to influence in the form of minimal techno, dub techno and ambient music forms. This particular track is one I can’t wait to play at my upcoming Aquarium gig. I hope the fishes are ready.

Nina Simone – House Of The Rising Sun – This is a live track from At The Village Gate, and I love how it’s slowed down to nice simmer which brings out all of the flavor, especially the soul that is Simone’s voice.

HappyBirthday!!! (belated)

Healdsburg, 2008

I think the term “clutch” is a an east coast term. I’m trying to bring acceptance to it on the west coast. Possibly have it replace “hella”, even though that term is as versatile as the word “fuck”. Today is going to be clutch. That huck was so clutch. You’re so clutch, you don’t even know it. It’s a powerful word. You can’t use it lightly. Good luck with it.

Here are some tracks that lean towards the side of funk………

Beans – Salt (Funkstorung Remix)

Blaqstarr featuring Rye Rye – Shake It To The Ground (Drop The Lime Remix)

Nina Simone – Funkier Than A Mosquito’s Tweeter (Live)

Emiliana Torrini – Gun
